The Nostalgia Trap
One thing that immediately stands out is the candidates' reliance on nostalgia. From Antonio Villaraigosa's 'Dream with me' mantra, a relic from his days as L.A. mayor, to Xavier Becerra's boasting about his battles with Trump as attorney general, it's as if they're trying to relive past glories. This trend is not unique to this race; it's a symptom of a larger issue in California politics.
Nostalgia, a concept once considered a malady, has crept into the political discourse, harkening back to a time when California was supposedly better. This dangerous sentiment has fueled movements and propositions that have shaped the state's history, often for the worse.
A Lack of Vision
In my opinion, what's missing from this debate and, indeed, the entire primary, is a clear vision for the future. The candidates seem content to dwell on the past, offering little in the way of innovative ideas or strategies to tackle the complex issues facing California today. It's as if they're afraid to step out of their comfort zones and present bold, forward-thinking solutions.
The only candidates who seemed to break free from this nostalgia trap were Matt Mahan and Tom Steyer, but even they struggled to make a compelling case. Steyer, despite his wealth and populist rhetoric, often appeared out of his depth, relying on notes rather than engaging with the audience.
A Battle for the Undecided
With no clear frontrunner, this election has become a battle for the undecided voters. Many Democrats, fearing their party's fate, are holding onto their ballots, waiting to see who emerges as the likeliest winner. This strategy, while understandable, highlights the lack of inspiration and trust in the current candidates.
The Real Winners and Losers
While the political consultants are reaping the benefits, the true losers are the Californians. We're left with a sense of uncertainty and a lack of faith in our potential leaders. The debate, and indeed the entire primary process, has failed to provide a clear path forward or a candidate who can unite and inspire.

This race also raises a deeper question about the state of politics in California and, perhaps, the nation. Are we so accustomed to choosing the 'least worst' option that we've lost sight of what true leadership and vision should look like? Have we become so jaded that we accept mediocrity and nostalgia as our political reality?

As an observer, I can't help but feel a sense of disappointment and a yearning for something different. California, a state known for its innovation and progressiveness, deserves better. We need candidates who can offer a fresh perspective, a new narrative, and a genuine hope for the future. Until then, we're left with a political landscape that feels more like a rerun than a thrilling drama.
